Van Kaap de Goede Wijn: Zuid-Afrika in pakket ontdekken

Jolandie Fouché ziet zichzelf als een moeilijk te temmen wijnmaakster met een sterk innerlijk kompas. Dit heeft haar ver gebracht, want naast opleiding en ervaring is het vooral haar feilloze buikgevoel dat verantwoordelijk is voor het succes van haar wijnen.

Jolandie Fouché uses grapes from four parcels - one in Malmesbury and three on the
Paardeberg - to produce this stunning Chenin Blanc. Poised, refreshing, focused and self-
confident, it has lovely granitic intensity, aromas of oatmeal and hay and a palate of salted
lemons and beeswax. Impressive stuff.

At once tropical and mineral, exuding aromas of yellow-fleshed nectarines, mangoes, crushed stones and lime peel. It’s full-bodied and fleshy but vibrant with a limey acidity. From four vineyards, vines planted between 1968 and 1980.

The 2023 Chenin Blanc comes from Swartland—70% from Paardeberg and 30% from west of Malmesbury on ferrous soils. This has a wonderful nose that leans more toward the pithy side. Waxy and resinous, it really translates the variety with aplomb. The palate is well balanced with a superb texture. There’s just a mote of viscosity, building toward a slightly creamy, lightly spiced, chamomile-tinged finish. Highly recommended.

Justin van Wyk creëert zijn blend in rhônestijl – maar mét een geweldige Zuid-Afrikaanse toets, aangezien hij de druif cinsault in de schijnwerpers zet. De druif beleeft momenteel een ware opleving in de Kaap en dat is niet zo gek: hij is de ouder van de Zuid-Afrikaanse paradedruif pinotage.

Draaiboek Wines is het project van vrienden die jaren geleden samen wijnbouw en oenologie studeerden aan de universiteit van Stellenbosch. Nu was het tijd om een nieuwe bladzijde om te slaan in hun 'Draaiboek': samen cool climate wijnen produceren. Fantastisch!

Wijnmaker Danie Steytler junior profiteert van de vooruitziende blik van zijn voorouders, die al in 1947 begonnen met de aanplant van chenin blanc op het beste terroir. Ook de wijnstokken die voor de 'Kliprug' zijn gebruikt, zijn inmiddels oud en dat resulteert in wijnen van hoge kwaliteit.

The Kaapzicht 2023 Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc Kliprug (or "rocky back") is from old bush vines planted in 1982. Back in the day, it was a challenge to sell Chenin Blanc, but the Steytler family remained committed to the grape. This is a sunny, north-facing block. It gets some shade from the mountains in the afternoon at about 5 p.m. The berries tend to be small in this dry landscape and turn a lovely golden color at harvest. This wine reveals a voluptuous mouthfeel with ripe fruit flavors of apricot, Golden Delicious apple and honey. Chenin Blanc incorporates oak well, and 20% new barrel is used (with a regime of French, Hungarian and Austrian wood). The wine matures for 10 months, and the lees are stirred once a month to protect against oxidation.

An attractively mineral chenin blanc that has notes of honey, dried apple, seashell and thyme. It’s medium- to full-bodied with a lightly chalky texture and a savory, long and mouthwatering finish. From a single vineyard in Bottelary planted in 1982.

Deze chardonnay laat op indrukwekkende wijze zien hoeveel potentieel deze druivensoort heeft in Zuid-Afrika.

Johan Kruger buys these grapes from Oubaas van Zyl's 1.3-hectare 1990 vineyard at 700
metres in Piekenierskloof. Truly remarkable at the price, it's an intense, nuanced, beautifully
balanced white with wax, butter, vanilla spice and citrus peel flavours, salty minerality and
effortless complexity.

A fresh and clean chardonnay that has sliced pear and grapefruit on the nose, plus a touch of butter cream. It’s medium- to full-bodied with creamy, fleshy stone fruit.

The 2023 Chardonnay Klipkop Old Vines comes from vines planted in 1992 and was aged in 20% new French oak. White peach, dried honey and egg whites open on the nose. This is nicely focused and perhaps the most understated of the three Chardonnays in this lineup. The palate is taut and slightly more tensile than the Swartland. It’s notably linear and saline, with a persistent finish. Very fine.
