The Alto Najerilla in the southern part of the Rioja Alta sub-region is the predominant source of this nicely judged assemblage of Tempranillo with 15% Mazuelo and Graciano for backbone. Perfumed, engaging and sweetly wooded, it partners vanilla spice and cinnamon aromas with a palate of blackberry and blueberry supported by graceful tannins and bright acidity.

The 2018 Gran Reserva Cune is 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from Rioja Alta, aged up to 24 months in American and French oak barrels. Aromas of plum and blackberry intermingle with herbal and oaky notes. Dry, creamy and chalky on the palate, it offers a fairly compact mouthfeel. This red wine presents a modern twist on the fruit-forward style, resembling more of a New World red than a classic Rioja

The 2018 Cune Gran Reserva was produced with grapes picked between the 8th and 26th of October, quite late into the season, reflecting a cooler year with frost and snow and a mild summer. The vegetative cycle was long, 180 days, and the final blend was 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo or Cariñena, mostly from their 70 hectares in Torremontalbo. The grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and concrete after a 24-hour cold soak, and the wine matured in French and American oak barrels for 24 months. They bottled the wine with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.76 grams of acidity. It has spicy notes from the oak, vanilla and coconut, and is aromatic and expressive, clean, with a classic Gran Reserve profile.

Het wijnhuis dateert uit de tijd dat de regio Rioja een ongekende opmars doormaakte – mede dankzij de intensieve uitwisseling met Frankrijk. Daar kwam Charles Serres vandaan, die zich later Carlos noemde en zijn bodega in Haro oprichtte. De stijl van zijn 'Gran Reserva' is nog steeds een schoolvoorbeeld van een typische rioja.

The very classical 2016 Gran Reserva comes with a very traditional label (they seem to have changed the image of most wines), including the golden wire net. It was produced with a selection of grapes from their El Estanque estate in Haro, a canonical 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French and American oak barrels for two years and was kept in bottle for another three. It has a textbook spicy nose with sweet spices, smoke and toast, berry fruit and herbs, a touch of forest floor and truffles, with a moderate 13.5% alcohol and balancing freshness. 47,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in 2021.

The scent of black cherry, tobacco leaf and chocolate sets the scene for flavors of red currant, raspberry, mocha, cherry pipe tobacco and a touch of eucalyptus. Sinewy tannins are offset by brilliant acidity that endures on the tongue and gums.

Complex aromatics of mixed plums, fig, and anise, orange zest and spices flow into a silken palate and a lingering finish with the approachability to enjoy now, or to hold for several more years in cellar.
