Proefnotitie
De spätburgunder (pinot noir) uit 2022 van Steffen en Andi Rings is fantastisch. De ‘Spätburgunder Kallstadter Steinacker’ uit een Erste Lage zou moeiteloos kunnen doorgaan als een Großes Gewächs. Hij onthult aroma’s van sappige zoete en zure kersen, bosbessen en wat cassis, een vleugje eikenhout en kreupelhout en een subtiele, rokerige reductieve toets. In de mond toont de spätburgunder veel spanning en sappigheid, kracht en concentratie, straffe tannines en frisse zuren. Kortom: hij is groots – maar gun hem wel wat tijd en lucht.

De ‘Spätburgunder Kallstadter Steinacker’ 2022 is een van de twee uitstekende pinot-noirwijnen van een VDP.Erste Lage. Het is zeker de moeite waard om deze wijn te vergelijken met de ‘Spätburgunder Leistadter Kalkofen’, die van hetzelfde niveau is, maar een iets ander terroir tot uitdrukking brengt.

Very tightly wound and racy, this is an exciting and intensely minerally Pfalz pinot noir that will please fans of the wines from Corton Grand Cru in Burgundy. So focused and energetic, with a compact core of fine tannins. Aromas and flavors of blueberries, cooked red beets and licorice. Terrific drive in the very long finish. Limited production from organically grown grapes. Bottled unfiltered after 18 months of maturation in barrels. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

The 2022 Spätburgunder Kallstadter Steinacker Erste Lage is from a site neighboring a limestone quarry, with thin topsoil. The vines are not even 20 years old, but they are planted with high density and yield tiny berries. Reductive funk on the nose leads to a concentrated palate that unites red and black forest fruit with a beautifully dense, fine and sleek body, always with a darker aspect. This needs time.

De wijn
De Kallstadter Steinacker is de koelste wijngaard van de familie Rings met een arme bodem. De wijngaard werd in 2005 beplant met Franse klonen. De druiven werden met de hand geoogst, gedeeltelijk ontsteeld en in hun geheel vergist in houten kuipen. De wijn rijpte in zowel nieuwe als gebruikte barriques gedurende anderhalf jaar en werd ongefilterd gebotteld.
