Proefnotitie
Ata Rangi is een echte ambassadeur van de Nieuw-Zeelandse wijnbouw en wordt terecht beschouwd als maatstaf voor de overzeese pinot noir. De opmaat met robijnrode kleur wordt gevolgd door een vuurwerk aan aroma’s met rijpe rode en zwarte bessen, kersen, pruimen, kruidige hints, florale nuancen en een perfect geïntegreerde houttoon. Alles bij elkaar doet het sterk denken aan een bourgogne-grand cru. In de mond met veel finesse, maar krachtig-kruidig, opnieuw met veel fruit, fluweelzachte tannine, fijne textuur en presente, minerale zuren. De afdronk is lang, gefocust, met goed gedoseerd hout en wordt gekenmerkt door een lengte die maar weinig pinot noirs bereiken. Pure aristocratie in het glas.

A complex wine from the outset with gently reductive notes and modern oak spice threading into fresh cherry, spiced bread, rose, forest wood and blood orange, as well as darker cherry notes. The palate tells the full story. This displays real power and definition with clear-cut and powerful tannins. The intensity of the red-cherry fruit is impressive and the way it occupies the finish with length and uplift is the thing that defines great pinot noir per se. Strong vintage.

Ata Rangi's 2019 Pinot Noir is the whole package. It has a piercing, focused nose, offering clarity of fruit and the backing support of lightly spiced French oak. Reminiscent of fresh yet sweet cherry fruit and woody herbs on the palate, it also reveals a savory tobacco and game note that's oh-so-Martinborough. The wine sits comfortably in your mouth, like a ball being gently cupped. It delivers excellent concentration, and the fine, powdery tannins coat the palate, leaving you licking the inside of your mouth and experiencing the texture of river stones. The finish is long, fresh and fragrant.

Really aromatic cranberry and redcurrant fruit with that gorgeous edge of white pepper. With air, the fruit almost gets a candied, heightened quality. On the palate, the fruit performs a veritable tight walk, between candied ripeness and utter freshness.

De wijn
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough 2019 is gevinifieerd van 100% pinot noir. De handmatige oogst vond plaats in maart en april, de opbrengst komt deels van de legendarische Abel-kloon die in de jaren '70 in het geheim vanuit de Bourgogne naar Nieuw-Zeeland werd geïmporteerd. Vóór de fermentatie werd 70% van de druiven ontsteeld. De fermentatie verliep in verschillende fases. Eerst werd vijf tot zes dagen koel gefermenteerd met wilde gisten, daarna volgde de normale gisting gedurende 20 tot 26 dagen bij 32 °C, waarbij de most regelmatig met de hand werd overgepompt. Na de soutirage begon de malolactische gisting in eiken vaten, daarna rijpte de wijn op Frans eiken (35% nieuw) gedurende elf maanden.
